Optimistic Outlook at GVCOC Annual Meeting
By Teri Breier, Chamber Ambassador

On the evening of January 27th, the Goleta Valley Chamber of Commerce held its Annual Meeting at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, attended by nearly 125 board members, sponsors, ambassadors, local media representatives and other business professionals.

After a cocktail hour where guests mingled over wines from Cellar 205 Oreana Winery and delicious soups and hors d’oeuvres catered by Marmalade Café, the program began with a recognition of the Chamber’s new and returning 2010 volunteer Ambassadors. Honored as Ambassador of the Year for his always enthusiastic involvement was Del Hegland of New York Life.

Chamber president Kristen Amyx then presented an upbeat PowerPoint review of 2009’s membership statistics and local business climate . Despite the economic challenges of this past year, the organization remains strong and is well-positioned for a successful year ahead.

Lead sponsor MarBorg Industries was recognized by outgoing 2009 Board Chair Joanne Funari of Business First Bank with the Chairman’s Award for its generous ongoing support of the Chamber. Funari then welcomed her successor, Steve Greig, Venoco, Inc. as the 2010 Board Chair.

Terry Bartlett, Reetz, Fox & Bartlett, Jim Knight, Novum, and Karen Ramsdell, Santa Barbara Airport, were recognized as the outgoing members of the Board of Directors.  Kathy Koeper, Marborg Industries, Michael Kramer, Ameravant Web Design, Tracy Lincoln, Santa Barbara Airport, and Tony Vallejo, Palius + O’Kelley Certified Public Accountants were installed as Board Members.

The Chamber remains grateful as always for the high caliber of directors, board members, sponsors and ambassadors who continue to support our mission in the Goleta Valley and Santa Barbara business community.

Message from the Chairman - 2010 is a Pivotal Year
by Steve Greig

2010 is a pivotal year for the Goleta Chamber. We had great success in 2009. You may feel slightly bruised from the pummeling of last year, but let me remind you that in 2009, we responded as any prudent business or organization did; we made important changes to reflect the economic instability in our community and in the country.  These were not insignificant changes.  We planned in 2008, we executed in 2009, and I would characterize 2010 as a year to be ready for anything that comes our way…up, down or in-between.  We know that predicting the future is impossible, however, being prepared, being nimble, and being smart about fulfilling our mission allows us to handle anything. We did this in 2009, and although we look different – being virtual- we did it with great success. Hard work, flexibility and vision are the links to our continued success. The lesson here is this: the Goleta Chamber is virtual, the people are real and the leadership is strong.

2010 will be a pivotal year, and a year of hard work. We need the Goleta Chamber to be financially strong and we are well on our way toward that goal. We need the city to have financial strength.   If we have one without the other, we will only have limited success, so we will work for both.

My goal for 2010 is to lead in a way that allows the Goleta Chamber to strengthen the economic conditions of the community we serve. We as a Chamber must do that, to serve our mission, our members and our community.
